Associated Grocers of New England

Current position:
Controller.  I am responsible for all functions under the Accounting, Credit and Retail Bookkeeping departments.

Years with company:
24 years

Education degrees and professional/volunteer organizations:
I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Vermont, and my graduate degree from Southern New Hampshire University.  I am a one of the founding members of our company’s Community Connection Committee.  Through the generosity of our employees and the organization, we support the charitable organizations with the greatest need in the greater Concord and Manchester, N.H., area.  I also have associations with the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Portsmouth Music Hall and the Appalachian Mountain Club.

Mentors and how have they assisted you in your career:
I would have to say the two people that have influenced me most in my professional career would be my father and my boss for the past 24 years, Steve Murphy.  Both have taught me the importance of hard work, integrity and the need to continue to grow professionally.

What are you most proud of in your career achievements? Do you have a defining moment of your career to date?
My career has presented me with ever-increasing responsibilities within the organization, beginning in the mail room to my current role as controller.  I am also proud of the fact that I have been able to help in the development of those that have worked for me and seen them grow professionally over the years.

Advice for upcoming younger executives:
I would encourage younger executives to seek out a mentor, learn as much as possible about your organization and those you serve and to find a way to give back to the community.

Hobbies:
Hiking is more than a hobby to me.  What began as goal to summit the 48 four-thousand-foot peaks in New Hampshire has become a passion and something I hope to do for many years to come.  We also have a group of us at work running in road races throughout the year.  Needless to say, I am also an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan.
